Tavern Tycoon Developer Log #3

I got back into Tavern Tycoon this week and have to say that it was quite difficult to shift gears from developing a tactical FPS (TenFour) to a tycoon game. Nevertheless, I got to do some work on character graphics.

To be honest, I thought about going with the non-textured version as it is less work and still good looking - to a degree - but quite a few people commented that it has to get textures. Then I thought about it, and thought, hell, why not? I mean it is an improvement at the least. So, after getting the game greenlit on Steam, I put it on top of other important list of things to work on and it looks awesome. I will most likely expand it and give several variations to each character group so that a lot of texturing for me for the next few days.

It has diffuse, normal, specular and gloss maps for the curious.

Optimization

Tavern Tycoon will be a good looking game, albeit it is a tycoon game. One of the problems of having a 3D tycoon game is that the game's performance scales poorly as the number of entities on the screen increases, thus dropping the frame rates per second figures as more things are happening on screen. It came to me as a challenge that the genre innately suffers in such way. I am still working on it, but it seems that the game is able to run on a i5 laptop with 4 gb ram and ATI Radeon HD7450M card at a stable 30+ FPS with some tweaks and compromises on the graphics settings. While the final hardware requirements are not set, I think we will be able support old machines to some extent (read the next paragraph).

On the other hand though, Tavern Tycoon will support 64bit (mostly likely will ship with 32bit and 64bit version) and along with it, a Dx11, SM3 GPU will be required, hence eliminating old cards that is not capable of supporting Dx11.

Tavern Tycoon has been Greenlit

What’s happening?

Man, I am so glad to share this news with you guys. We just got Greenlit! it took us 41 days, top20 and more than 10k "YES" votes for this to happen and it really was a journey that we've never expected - exciting and exhausting at the same time. Nonetheless, it is over and we'd like to zero in on having the game ready as soon as possible.

So what does this mean? Well, it means that we will be focusing on having the game ready for release in Q4 2014. It also means that we will be releasing more trailers and gameplay footage for your curious guys. We'd like to extend thanks to many people who supported us through this process, now let's get this game ready for shelf!

Plus, what does this mean for TenFour? (this is the newly announced tactical FPS game that we are working on right now) It will obviously receive less development time until Tavern Tycoon is ready, but will continue to be that one tactical FPS we all dream about.

Tavern Tycoon on Top 25 on Steam.

We broke through Top 25 on Steam Greenlight two days ago and sitting idle at the Top 24 right now. It is quite amazing that the game is receiving this much support given that this is our first commercial game. It took us by a surprise but hey, we don't mind being popular. We are currently finalizing the features that are to be included in the game and it looks like the game will get some parts of it redone, primarily to make the game more enjoyable and post production support a smooth ride.

We are also working on the multi language support, refer back to this Dev Log http://www.terapoly.com/tavern-tycoon-developer-log-2  if you haven't read about it, but basically are trying to figure out a easier and more accessible platform.

New FPS inbound – TenFour

TenFour, the long waited FPS project is now slowly getting ready for public testing. We are mostly spending time making maps so it should be ready very soon. Here is a general breakdown of the features.

 

  • Online competitive FPS - designed to run at 125FPS
  • Team orientated
  • Unforgiving Tactical Shooter
  • Pre-round planning (like old R6 games)
  • Total Gun Control

New Section for the Site

So you must have noticed the "PC Gaming" tab on the main menu and while it is still a WIP and a young concept, we are keen to provide more in depth and easy-to-follow guides to PC gaming. We will soon be updating both the gaming build guide and the GPU rankings page in near future. We will try our best to provide a fair and objective guide so that pc gamers gain deeper control of their gaming rigs.
